The Little Things Matter

We are taught to dream big. We walk around saying, "Go big or go home." We have a mentality that if we can't have it all, it's not enough or it’s not worth it. We even expect others around us to give us the world with every word or gift. The reality is that's not real. Yes, give it your all. Of course, you want to reach the highest high. But you do not get there by getting it all done that day.

No one ever walked into a gym and deadlifted 600 pounds on the first try. No one ever walked into a kitchen and made a souffle on the first try. No, they both had to have had previous knowledge, understanding, and training to make that happen. It is the little things that make the difference. Our faith is the same way.

You will not go out and baptize 1,000 people on your first day of evangelizing. You won't comfort and pray for your brother in Christ perfectly on the first try. You won't share in your sister's burdens sufficiently the first time around. Your prayers are going to be messy—your bible studying inconsistent. Your good works will be sporadic and hectic at first. When you are doing them every day, they will get better.

In turn, you grow a little bit stronger each day and each try. One day you will look back and see how far you have come. Growing takes time. If you stare at a clock it looks like time never moves. If you stare at a plant, it looks like it never grows. However, walk away and see how much progress is made when you return. The same is true with you. The only time growth doesn’t happen is when we fail to take those messy and clumsy baby steps in our faith.

Those little things get us to heaven. Trying every day to do something for the Lord changes the world. If all you do today is pray, read scripture, and do something kind for at least one person, you have done something incredible! The world you walk in never considers such rebellious things. So, don't try to save the world today. Just say a prayer for someone. Just speak biblical truth to a person. Open a door for a soul. It's the little things that matter for you and them.
