Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan

The construction industry has been referred to as one of the most dangerous professions in the US. During the 1980’s, OSHA recorded more than 17 construction related deaths every day. Since then, the safety culture in construction has drastically turned that around. In 2024, the number of construction-related deaths dropped to 3 per day, or 1,075 per year. One of the ways companies keep safety relevant to workers is by implementing safety campaigns or safety slogans. I’ve heard many different ones over the years, but one of my favorites has been, “Plan your work, work your plan.” The thought behind this is one must plan out every step of every task, recognize the hazards associated with these tasks, and know how to mitigate the hazards before starting work. The theory behind this is if you deviate from the well thought out plan, you risk your safety to unrecognized hazards.

The same goes for our spiritual safety as well. The difference is, we don’t have to write out the plan. God already has.

The Bible is very clear on our plan of salvation.

  • Hear (Romans 10:17) So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  • Believe (Hebrews 11:6) But without faith it is impossible to please him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

  • Repent (Luke 13:3) I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.

  • Confess (Romans 10:10) For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

  • Be Baptized (Acts 2:38) Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

  • Be Faithful unto Death (Revelations 2:10) Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

If we take a short-cut and deviate from the boss’ plan on a construction site, we may put our body in harm’s way. But if we deviate from God’s plan, we put our eternal souls in jeopardy. Don’t become a statistic and take a short-cut. The plan has been laid before you, work God’s plan.
