Cornerstone

The words “humble” and “humility” are mentioned in the Bible more than 80 times. A major part of Jesus’ message was remaining humble while staying faithful. James 4:10 states, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” It can be difficult to remain humble in the world today. Our society seems to be about “What can I do for myself?” “How do I get the upper hand?” “How am I able to exalt myself to progress in the world?” This sort of thinking is opposite of how the Bible calls Christians to live.

The words “humble” and “humility” are mostly seen in the Old Testament. This is interesting because much of Old Testament history is about the Lord’s people exalting themselves above God and one another. They fall away and God restores. They fall away again and God restores. This pattern is seen through and through. Remaining humble and having humility are such important characteristics we must strive to embody as Christians. I believe these are a cornerstone of our faith.

Jesus taught that if we humble ourselves, we will be exalted. (Luke 14:11) Christ humbled himself all the way to death on the cross. (Philippians 2:5-10) And that’s why we praise Him! Thanks be to God! With that in mind, may we always strive for humility and to be the example to others as Christ was for the world.
